The space background was done as a slab on the wheel, with the spiral incised. Directly off the wheel, I stretched the slab to create the lines you see. The slab spent some time drying on a plaster mold I made (from a wok). Once leather-hard I hand built the spaceships and attached them to the now curved slab.
